Today Alplas continues to be a family-owned business, with third-generation family members taking the business forward. The company ethos has always been one of a hands-on and inclusive management approach with the Directors working alongside colleagues, engaging directly with customers, suppliers and each part of the business, sharing ideas, problem-solving and best practices.
Alplas has built a network of well-integrated staff with considerable ability in all areas from highly skilled engineers and dedicated operatives through to our knowledgeable sales, creative marketing and efficient administration teams. This has helped Alplas to establish a reputation for outstanding and friendly customer service. Alplas is known for solving customers’ display problems, for bespoke design or for sourcing unknown display products. When a solution is adopted by a customer, great attention is given to delivering right the first time, on time.
Alplas was the first, the original Point of Sale (POS) accessory company in the UK. Incorporated in 1965 by Bob Hood, affectionately known in the industry as the Godfather of POS accessories back in the day.
This was the time when the first shelf barkers, ticket rails and bus stop clips appeared in our shops. Early innovations included the ‘Top Entry Holder’ barker, the ‘Pinch-Bar’ tube system and the ‘Signbiter’ clip. Over the years new products were created, existing products evolved and the business grew with expanding international relationships. Marketing with hand-drawn artwork and exhibiting with help from the extended family was the order of the day. Firm foundations were laid.

Alplas is conveniently located in Basildon, Essex, just off the M25. Our 63,000 sq ft building affords huge warehousing for stock and contract orders, often with many dozens of pallets assigned to one order and awaiting despatch. We have a very large manufacturing press room supporting seven presses from 35 to 210-tonne clamping force, with room for more when we want, and a fully equipped engineering tool room with the latest CNC milling.
This is unusual in UK injection moulding and allows complete in-house tooling with immediate attention to tooling problems, ensuring the smooth running of production.
This is our core business and we offer a complete plastic injection moulding solution from concept design, through modelled prototyping and tooling to manufacture. As well as our own product development our expert design and tooling engineers guide customers through all design stages of bespoke projects so that the right product solution results. Over the years Alplas has developed into a comprehensive design, engineering and manufacturing company whereby for us ‘Made in Britain’ means origination, quality, control and reliability. Alplas products are widely distributed throughout the UK and around the world.
Complementing our manufacturing, Alplas has longstanding connections with the world’s best POS accessory companies, bringing the best products to the UK. This is something that has taken many years to achieve as some companies discover their cost when sourcing, Far East products. We’ve done the due diligence, to overcome the problems often associated with Chinese producers, and now have a network of tried and tested suppliers that know what we expect so that we don’t let our customers down.
Alplas has played a significant role in the evolution of the POS industry through innovation and good design and is the source of many display accessory products in use today. For example, Alplas was the first company to develop plastic Eurohooks, now much copied around the world – we continue to lead the market, being both perfectly designed and using only PA 66 glass-filled nylon for strength.
Anti sweep swing tag
Understanding problems is a key part of what we do and this led to the development of our Anti Sweep Swing Tag. This is a very low cost anti-theft price tag to deter sweeping of high value stock from Merchandising Hooks.
Super strength metal replacement polymers
We also introduced the use of super strength metal replacement polymers as used in aerospace and F1 racing. Now we have brought forward the next generation of plastic round ended hook, purpose designed to take a pricing swing tag – completely new in the industry.
