Manufacturing Sustainability

Injection Moulding Process

  1. The fully automated injection moulding process involves taking plastic granules called polymers and feeding them into a heated barrel where they become molten.
  2. Once molten, the polymer is injected under high pressure into the mould, producing the desired shape where it cools and solidifies before the mould opens and the finished part is ejected.
  3. The mould consists of three main components: the two halves that shut together creating the form and the ejection unit that removes the product upon completion.
  4. This process is quick, repeatable, and highly accurate, making it a great solution for mass-producing parts within a short time frame.

Benefits of Injection Moulding

  • Efficient – Once the injection moulding mould has been created, the process takes less than a minute. A well-maintained mould can produce over 1M parts. Whether it’s a single or multi-impression tool, injection moulding is the perfect solution for high-volume parts.
  • Affordability – Considering the high output from the injection moulding process, the overall cost per part made is relatively low. You can keep costs down even further depending on the type of mould used and number of cavities.
  • Diversity – When it comes to polymers, a great range of plastic materials can be used in the process.
  • Clean – Compared to other manufacturing processes, there is very little waste left over from injection moulding. Any waste that is produced can be recycled later.
  • Detail – It’s possible to produce highly detailed and complex shapes.
  • No Post-Processing – Once the piece has been moulded there is little to no post-production needed to make it ready for use.
